Description

Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery, development and commercialization of innovative therapies to improve the lives of people with respiratory and inflammatory diseases.

Our History

Our company was founded in 1992 with a natural products technology licensed from the University of British Columbia (UBC). The natural product was Contignasterol, isolated from the marine sponge Petrosia Contignata that was collected off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Originally working at a small site on the campus of UBC, in 1993 we moved to our current facility in Richmond, and we were joined by Dr. David Burgoyne, the scientist that discovered Contignasterol to lead our efforts in Discovery Research. From Contignasterol, we developed a proprietary class of compounds that resulted in the development of our Leukocyte Selective Anti-Inflammatory Drug (LSAIDs™) program. Inflazyme has developed capabilities in medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, regulatory and clinical development, and business and finance to build a company that is developing a strong franchise in inflammatory diseases, in particular, respiratory diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Our Current Technologies

LSAIDs™

Our lead program, the LSAIDs™, are small molecules that have unique anti-inflammatory properties together with certain physical, chemical and biological features that make them suitable as potential once, or twice a day, oral medicines. Since our LSAIDs™ have demonstrated clear efficacy in several models of lung inflammation, our target diseases are asthma, allergic rhinitis and COPD.

So far, three LSAID™ products have advanced into clinical studies evaluating both safety and efficacy. All have been shown to be safe and well tolerated at the doses studied and our most advanced product, IPL512,602, is an oral once a day therapy that is being developed as a potential treatment for persistent asthma.

PDE4 Inhibitors

Inhibitors of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) are the basis of our second program. The PDE4 program is also based on a natural product, on this occasion a chemical isolated from a medicinal plant, discovered by Inflazyme's scientists. Inhibition of the PDE4 enzyme is important in controlling the activities of leukocytes by preventing the release of chemicals that can harm the body.

Historically, PDE4 inhibitors have been associated with nausea or vomiting (also referred to as emesis) which has hampered the successful development of this particular class of compounds. Our scientists have produced several diverse libraries of PDE4 specific inhibitors that do not appear to cause the unwanted emetic side effects.

Our most advanced PDE4 inhibitor is IPL455,903, an oral product which has commenced a Phase IIa clinical trial. IPL455,903 is being studied in memory disorders by our partner, Helicon Therapeutics, Inc. Results are expected in early 2007.
